As we take a peek into Mr. Brito’s classroom, four months after Hurricane Katrina, Amber, a four-year-old little girl whose family evacuated from New Orleans, has developed a very ongoing positive and authentic relationship with peers and teachers. Amber was placed in an ELL’s (English Language Learner) class. Now, she understands commands, plays games and sings songs in Spanish. She has also contributed to her peers’ English language learning since she is the only English speaker in the classroom. Mr. Brito encourages the other children in his room to show Amber they like her, enjoy being with her, and are having fun with her. Now, Amber’ facial expressions and laughter reflects a happy child.
